Do I need to apply for an EMS license?

No. In Colorado, as long as you hold a certification you can practice medicine as an EMS professional (under a licensed medical director). A license is optional.

What is the difference between a license and a certification?

A license requires a bachelor’s degree whereas a certification does not. Your National Registry or EMS course completion does NOT count as a bachelor’s degree.

Are there any benefits to obtaining a license?

Your scope of practice or the duration of your license does not change, however, it does acknowledge that you have completed a four-year bachelor's degree in health sciences or an equivalent field.

I’m an initial applicant, can I apply for a license?

Yes, you can select “licensed” in the EMS Provider Certification/License - Initial application and upload a copy of your bachelor’s degree transcript.

What are the requirements to become licensed?

Submit ONE transcript from an accredited college or university demonstrating that you have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree program in a field related to the health sciences or an equivalent field.

Why are degrees other than a bachelor’s not accepted?

Colorado Statute states that only bachelor’s degrees are accepted for obtaining a license at this time.

Do I have to convert my EMS provider certification to a license?

No. Converting your Colorado EMS provider certification to a license is OPTIONAL. If you choose not to convert your certification to a license, you will remain certified and will be able to renew your certification as you always have.

How do I convert my certification to a license?

You can convert your certification to a license by requesting a Convert to License form be added to your OATH account or by choosing the license option when you submit your next renewal application.

With a license, will I still need to practice under an EMS medical director?

Yes. The EMS medical director requirement applies to all certified and licensed EMS providers.
