Do I need to apply for an EMS license? |
No. In Colorado, as long as you hold a certification you can practice medicine as an EMS professional (under a licensed medical director). A license is optional. |
What is the difference between a license and a certification? |
A license requires a bachelor’s degree whereas a certification does not. Your National Registry or EMS course completion does NOT count as a bachelor’s degree. |
Are there any benefits to obtaining a license? |
Your scope of practice or the duration of your license does not change, however, it does acknowledge that you have completed a four-year bachelor's degree in health sciences or an equivalent field. |
I’m an initial applicant, can I apply for a license? |
Yes, you can select “licensed” in the EMS Provider Certification/License - Initial application and upload a copy of your bachelor’s degree transcript. |
What are the requirements to become licensed? |
Submit ONE transcript from an accredited college or university demonstrating that you have completed a four-year bachelor’s degree program in a field related to the health sciences or an equivalent field. |
What subjects or equivalent fields qualify for a license? |

Why are degrees other than a bachelor’s not accepted? |
Colorado Statute states that only bachelor’s degrees are accepted for obtaining a license at this time. |
Do I have to convert my EMS provider certification to a license? |
No. Converting your Colorado EMS provider certification to a license is OPTIONAL. If you choose not to convert your certification to a license, you will remain certified and will be able to renew your certification as you always have. |
How do I convert my certification to a license? |
You can convert your certification to a license by requesting a Convert to License form be added to your OATH account or by choosing the license option when you submit your next renewal application. |
With a license, will I still need to practice under an EMS medical director? |
Yes. The EMS medical director requirement applies to all certified and licensed EMS providers. |
